Director's Note:

Cupid and Psyche is written in iambic pentameter and modeled after a Shakespearean play in structure.   Although this production was presented as a workshop of a new play, all of the actors performed off-book, in character mask, full make-up and costume with a minimal set and a few props. The ultimate function of the workshop of a new play is for the work of the actors and director to provide an opportunity for the playwright to see and hear characters in time and space as opposed to on a piece of paper.

As the director, I feel that the most effective way to achieve the desired physical rendering of the words and world created by the playwright is to work with actors who can embody text, without a script in their hands, and with a strong focus on character work in order to discover and create certain truths  contained within the text of the play, especially in the case of works such as Shakespeare that require the handling of rich and often complex imagery and themes.
